Heep Hong Society Shanghai Fraternity Association Healthy Kids Kindergarten is a mainstream kindergarten. It has K1-K3 classes. Each class has no more than 30 students. The teacher-student ratio is 1:11, so that children and teachers have more interactive opportunities to enhance teaching effectiveness. In addition, the teaching has the following characteristics in order to do a good job in integrated education.

The Montessori method of education

The school fully adopts evidence-based Montessori teaching method to inspire children's autonomous learning ability. Principal Ng said: "Generally parents think that the biggest task for children in kindergarten is to read and write, but they often neglect to teach their children the ability to be independent. The Montessori method of teaching can cultivate many abilities that are easily overlooked, such as: concentration, order, self-discipline, memory, observation, independent self-confidence, social skills, physical coordination, etc., which seem to have nothing to do with learning on the surface, in fact all indirectly affect children's learning ability."

Montessori teaching features:

• Teaching is carried out for each stage of children's development. In a harmonious learning environment, children can work freely according to their pace, interest and potential, gradually build self-confidence, cultivate self-discipline and enjoy the fun of learning, so the classroom will be quieter.
• Children use Montessori-specific teaching tools to allow children to actively explore instead of focusing on paper homework and forcibly memorizing abstract concepts. The classroom is no longer one-way instilling knowledge or relying only on the teacher to correct mistakes, but the teacher arranges a suitable environment to observe and appropriately guide children’s learning.
• In Montessori classroom children make creative choices in their learning, children through special teaching aids to learn independently. A full set of 450 learning boxes, mainly divided into six learning areas: intelligent inspiration, mathematical deduction, combined thinking, life skills, language expression, aesthetic creation, is a complete and systematic brain development learning tool.

The Expert Team

The expert team of Heep Hong Society has accumulated rich experience in childcare and teaching, and cooperated with the SWD's "On-School Rehabilitation Service" to create an inclusive campus for our school. Our professional team (including Educational Psychologists, Speech Therapists, Physio Therapists, and Occupational therapists) will regularly come to school to share parenting experiences with parents; in addition, our experts have written a number of evidence-based universal designs ( Universal design) textbooks, such as "The Language Learning Package for Pre-primary Children", which helps to improve children’s listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and "Think Bright", which trains children’s higher-order thinking. In addition to supporting students with developmental disabilities, it is also suitable for children in general, as well as students in the entire classroom.

The Project Approach

The teaching model adopted by our school is based on “child-centredness” as the core value of the curriculum. Through “Project Approach" and "Inquiry Teaching Method”, six learning areas (Physical Fitness and Health, Language, Early Childhood Mathematics, Nature and Living, Self and Society and Arts and Creativity) provide children with a comprehensive learning experience. There is also STEM teaching to cultivate children's exploration and scientific spirit, let them understand that life is closely related to technology, and inspire children's creativity and problem-solving ability.

Learning is carried out in the form of group activities, with activities according to the theme, such as: outings, art creation, scientific experiments, celebrations, etc. The school also follows the " Kindergarten Education Curriculum Guide " (2017) to plan its curriculum, and does not require children to do mechanical copying or to do excessive drills on calculation

School social workers

The growth of children depends on the care and support of parents. Heep Hong Society has always been committed to promoting parent’s full participation in children's learning and encouraging mutual support among parents. In order to cope with the “Pilot Scheme on Social Work Service for Pre-Primary Institutions”launched by the SWD in 2019, the school has professional social workers to support the needs of pre-school children, parents/carers, and staff, and provide moral education and emotional management for children Early identification of potential crisis preschool children and their family members, and provide immediate intervention counseling and referral support.

Our school will also communicate closely with parents through family outdoor activities, parent groups, parent seminars, individual interviews with parents, parent events, home visits and face-to-face interviews. It also provides multiple ways for parents to understand children’s activities and courses, such as Children Portfolio and Preschool Progress Reports etc. There is also a companion reading plan. Parents lead children to read story books every week, and books are provided which encourage parents to read together with their children at home.

No Assessment for Admissions

The principal and head teacher will meet each family individually. There is no assessment component. Through conversations to strengthen mutual understanding, parents can learn more about the school’s educational philosophy and model, and the school can also understand the situation of children. It is convenient for schools to organize child-oriented school-based courses. Children who are over two years old and have received a Hong Kong birth certificate can register. We are convinced that every child has the right to education.
