SCERTS Model Implementation Guide

SCERTS Model Implementation Guide

Heep Hong Society introduced the SCERTS (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, Transactional Support) Model for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from the US to Hong Kong in 2011 and has since then developed adjustments to maximise its benefits for local children. The model has three major features: (1) it helps children with ASD to improve their motivation for communication and socialising; (2) enhances their problem-solving and emotional regulation competences; and (3) emphasises the importance of transactional support provided by the multi-disciplinary team and parents. The SCERTS Team of the Society published the SCERTS Model Implementation Guide to facilitate professionals and parents in grasping the specific strategies to help children with ASD. Chapter 1 explains the principles and theory of the SCERTS Model; Chapter 2 provides step-by-step guidelines in applying the SCERTS Model in local settings through three case studies. A complimentary DVD of practical training materials (e.g. emotion cue cards, animation, waiting spinner, timetable and general regulation tips) is included. For better training, trainers can use the Guide with the free ‘Social Emotion’ iPad and Android app. This book was sponsored by the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged. Buy Now

Sports Training for Lower Primary Students with Autism

Sports Training for Lower Primary Students with Autism

Physical Education is in the curriculum of mainstream education to improve the physical and psychological well-being, and nurture the team spirit of students. Nevertheless, owing to their problems of motor coordination, and difficulties in social communication and emotion regulation, most high-functioning students with autism derive no satisfaction from sports, and fall behind the physical education syllabus. Written by the Physiotherapy Team at Heep Hong Society, this book helps teachers and parents learn more about the physical condition of primary one to three high-functioning students with autism, and compiles over 100 professional and practical exercises to strengthen the fundamental abilities of students affected and their specific techniques in tossing, skipping, track activities, and ball games. The exercises incorporate social and communication skills training and emotion management training to improve the children’s interpersonal skills. Each exercise is illustrated with step-by-step instructions and pictures for teachers and parents to conduct systematic training for their children at school or at home, using training materials adapted from daily necessities. A DVD is included with videos of the exercises for reference. This book was sponsored by the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged. Buy Now

The Language Learning Package for Pre-primary Children (Enhanced Edition)

The Language Learning Package for Pre-primary Children (Enhanced Edition)

Foreign research shows that 20%–30% of preschool children are potentially dyslexic. Local studies have similar findings that 27% of kindergarten 2 children and 25% of kindergarten 3 children in Hong Kong are potentially dyslexic. To support these children, Heep Hong Society’s ‘Read and Write: A Jockey Club Learning Support Network’ Working Group initiated a three-year project of research and development, design, trials and effectiveness studies to develop suitable teaching and learning materials. The Language Learning Package for Pre-primary Children was launched in 2009. In the following year, the Society embarked on a three-year partnership with 18 kindergartens, where The Language Learning Package was incorporated into the curriculum. The effectiveness studies revealed that after receiving one year of support services, the 311 children identified as potentially dyslexic have shown substantial improvement in their listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities. Around 30% of them were no longer identified as having potential learning difficulties. The Society published The Language Learning Package for Pre-primary Children (Enhanced Edition) in May 2014, compiling the extensive clinical experience and insights of educational psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and preschool teachers. The Enhanced Edition comprises a teacher’s manual, and two learning activities handbooks (each accompanied by a resource CD-ROM) tailor-made for kindergarten 2 (K2) and kindergarten 3 (K3) students. The contents of the handbooks are divided into several learning categories, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. A total of 144 learning activities are included. The Enhanced Edition will help early childhood educators use the teaching materials more effectively and, therefore, make learning more enjoyable for young children.   The publication was sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
