Sports Training for Lower Primary Students with Autism

Sports Training for Lower Primary Students with Autism

Physical Education is in the curriculum of mainstream education to improve the physical and psychological well-being, and nurture the team spirit of students. Nevertheless, owing to their problems of motor coordination, and difficulties in social communication and emotion regulation, most high-functioning students with autism derive no satisfaction from sports, and fall behind the physical education syllabus. Written by the Physiotherapy Team at Heep Hong Society, this book helps teachers and parents learn more about the physical condition of primary one to three high-functioning students with autism, and compiles over 100 professional and practical exercises to strengthen the fundamental abilities of students affected and their specific techniques in tossing, skipping, track activities, and ball games. The exercises incorporate social and communication skills training and emotion management training to improve the children’s interpersonal skills. Each exercise is illustrated with step-by-step instructions and pictures for teachers and parents to conduct systematic training for their children at school or at home, using training materials adapted from daily necessities. A DVD is included with videos of the exercises for reference. This book was sponsored by the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged.

Booklet on Easy Stretching

Booklet on Easy Stretching

The majority of children with special needs suffer from physical developmental problems, in particular, the soft tissue tightness, which adversely affects the daily lives and learning performance of the children, such as their sitting postures in class, writing, getting dressed, cycling and swimming. Passive stretching is one of the most commonly used treatment techniques applied by physiotherapists to ease the soft tissue tightness problem, and facilitate their gross motor development, thereby contributing to a higher quality of life of the children affected. The publication marshals the clinical experience of the Physiotherapist Team of Heep Hong and is dedicated to parents of children with special needs for their training at home. The booklet expounds on the types and causes of soft tissue tightness, and demonstrates with pictures the skills of stretching children’s neck, body, upper extremities and lower extremities.
